Road to Emmaus - Liz Lemon Swindle

Liz Lemon's Swindle new painting "Road to Emmaus" is now in the gallery.

What we think of as patience may actually be perspective. The ability to see things as they really are gives us the courage to wait upon the Lord even when life takes unexpected turns. The story of the road to Emmaus illustrates this principle beautifully.
Three days after the Savior´s death, two of His disciples walked the dusty road from Jerusalem to Emmaus. As they spoke, they were joined by a traveler who asked about their conversation. The disciples replied, "Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem...they have crucified [Jesus]. But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel."
Then the stranger said, "Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?" He then opened the scriptures to them, showing how all of the prophets had testified that Christ would be crucified and rise on the third day. As night fell the disciples asked the traveler to join them for a meal. Sitting together the stranger, "...took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave to them. And their eyes were opened, and they knew...[it was Jesus]." - Luke 24:17-32
We are often like the disciples. We let the worries of the day keep us from recognizing that the Savior is walking alongside us. We are quick to treat our trials as curses, instead of trusting that with God´s perspective our "curses" may actually be blessings. May we be more willing to wait upon the Lord, and may we see things as they really are as we walk our own roads to Emmaus.

New by Liz Lemon Swindle.....FEAR NOT

In her own words Liz Lemon Swindle talks about her new painting of a young shepherd boy:

“It was prophesied that Jesus would be born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2); and Jewish tradition held that His birth would be announced from Migdal Eder - a watchtower located near Bethlehem on the road to Jerusalem. A passage in the Mishnah says that the flocks at Migdal Eder were destined for Temple sacrifice. We may infer that the angel did come to Migdal Eder and the shepherds who heard the announcement and followed the star would be the perfect choice to spread the word of Christ’s birth. They would shortly lead their flocks to the temple to be sacrificed and while there would tell all of the miraculous birth." - Edersheim, Jesus the Messiah, p. 131; Sketches of Jewish Life, p. 76-77

I wanted to capture the moment when a little shepherd boy at the watchtower was awaken by a Heavenly light and heard those words so long foretold, "Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord." - Luke 2:10-11

Tribute to Utah Pioneers

 July is a month to remember our Freedoms.  The Fourth of July we celebrate as a Nation our Independence.  The 24th of July Utah celebrates the Mormon Pioneers and their sacrifices for the right to practice religion without persecution. It was in July that the first pioneers arrived in the Salt Lake Valley and found a place to settle.

This painting of Joseph Smith is by Utah artist Liz Lemon Swindle.  It shows Joseph in Liberty Jail where he was imprisoned in a cellar so small he could not even stand up.  Having visited the jail myself I can tell you my heart aches thinking of the time he spent in those conditions.

 This painting is by Sandra B. Rast.  It shows the sacrifice of young boys who were willing to safely carry some of the pioneers through icy waters to safety on the opposite shore.

These young men later died from their exposure to the cold wet weather.

I have had people come into the gallery and cry in front of both of these pictures.  It is a tribute to the Prophet Joseph Smith and to the pioneers for the dedication to God and their determination to practice their religion.

Liz Lemon Swindle "Against The Wind"

AGAINST THE WIND

 This is a painting Liz did a number of years ago.  Recently there has been renewed interest in it and it is now available as a canvas. I wonder if the interest is because more of us have the feeling we are sinking......

Here is what Liz says about this painting:

When Peter saw the Savior walking on the water he cried out, "Lord…bid me come unto thee."

"Come." was all He said.

Filled with faith, Peter stepped from the safety of the boat on to the stormy sea. But as the winds picked up and the waves grew stronger Peter’s faith turned to fear. As he began to sink, Peter cried out, "Lord, save me."

Two thousand years later, Christ is still calling to us. As we step from the safety of self-reliance on to the stormy seas of discipleship, like Peter we pray, "Lord, save me."

With perfect calmness He stills the winds of our doubt, reaches down from heaven and saves us.

New Parable by Liz Lemon Swindle

You Are The Salt of The Earth 

Early in the Savior´s ministry, He climbed the hills surrounding the Sea of Galilee and taught what we now call the Sermon on the Mount. During that sermon of sermons the Lord said, "Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? It is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out..." - Matthew 5:13.

His disciples were more familiar with the symbolism of salt than we are today. They understood its preserving power in a world without refrigerators. They realized that salt loses its savor when mixed with something else. They further understood its cleansing power and its importance in adding flavor to life.

All of these symbols were involved in the Savior´s parable, but there was one that stands out above the others. Salt was an integral part of temple sacrifices and so became associated with the covenant people. Through this parable Jesus reminds us that we become salt when we make and keep covenants with God. As we remain true to those covenants and avoid mixing with worldly influences, we can be cleansed, preserved, and become the "salt of the earth."

Carl Bloch Exhibit at BYU

Today I had the opportunity to see the Carl Bloch exhibit at the BYU Museum of Art.  What a great exhibit to be able to see.

SUPERMAN'S MOM by Liz Lemon Swindle

SUPERMAN'S  MOM

Last week I fought a dragon strong
Then climbed a castle wall.
Too bad I fell from off the roof
Mom's flowers broke my fall.

Then yesterday, I sailed to sea
The pirates at the door.
Too bad the tub was just too small
To keep the ocean off the floor.

Today, I launched a rocket to
The moon for mom to see.
Too bad the wheel came flying off
And so I skinned my knee.

But mom was there to pick me up
And make me feel alright.
Then send me out to save the world
And put my cape on tight.

LIZ LEMON SWINDLE- New Art

In a very ambitious undertaking Liz is painting the parables found in the Bible in a traditional version and a modern version.

One of her most recent is the Rich Young Ruler. It is perhaps easy to visualize the young man in a Bible setting reluctant to give up all that he has to follow Jesus.






Here we see a sight that maybe brings this challenge a little closer to home.

Liz has again done an extraordinary job at bringing to life a message from the Scriptures.

SANDRA B. RAST - Friday the 17th of December from 6-8pm


Come and visit with Sandra Rast on Friday the 17th. A local artist, Sandra is well know for her wonderful portrayals of the pioneer heritage here in Utah.

I took this picture in her home, the original of course is just stunning, my photograph does not do it justice. Sandra is now painting some wonderful florals. We will have some originals in the gallery.

This is Liz's latest painting, " Come Follow Me". It is such a calming and wonderful painting.

Liz Lemon Swindle, also a Utah artist is well known for her series of paintings on the life of Joseph Smith and her more recent project on the life of Christ "Son of Man".

Her newest project is painting the Parables. Come and meet Liz on Saturday.

Liz Lemon Swindle - SHOW - Dec 18th - BOUNTIFUL

Liz Lemon Swindle will be here in the Bountiful Gallery on Saturday the 18th of December from 6pm-8pm.

Liz is well known for her inspirational art. The picture to the left is titled "I am the Resurrection", the story of Christ raising Lazarus from the dead.







Currently Liz is doing a project painting the Parables in the Bible. Here you see "The Good Samaritan". This version represents the old world version, but her project includes a modern depiction as well. The project is quite an undertaking.

We hope you come to meet Liz. We will have her books, ornaments and some of her latest works available.
